December 2021 - Lualemba Bungalow Resort - Nemberala Rote Island - Newsletter

weather

Early December the build up to the wet season became very humid with regular storm activity. This brought some amazing sunsets and brightened the landscape with greening up the plant life as Nemberala doesn’t have pretty much no rain from April through to October.

Stillness in the December afternoon makes an explosion of color with the sunset behind the storm clouds.

surf

Surfing in Nemberala (Tland) was quite small except for 3 days a 3-4 swell pushed through creating some fun waves. Not many surfers around Rote at the moment I was lucky enough to have a solo and a couple 3 person sessions. The winds were so light for them 3 particular days that the south to south west direction didn’t affect the quality of the wave.

News

Some sadness rocked the Nemberala village on 4 December 2021 with the sudden death of Simon Baitanu age 35 due to a illness he was unable to recover from. He was healthy as 2 weeks prior. Simon worked at a few bars in and around Nemberala so a few people who have traveled to Rote probably knew him. He was planning to marry in January 2022 and leaves behind a 18 month daughter.

Lualemba Time Warp

We were lucky enough to catch up with Fitry who was here from Jakarta to farewell her brother Simon. She has just graduated from university in November with her degree in tourism. Fitry stayed with us in the early days while she finished her senior years at school. She could speak excellent English (except she had an Aussie accent which is another story), when we had the Lualemba Restaurant and Bar on the main road in Nemberala and were building the Lualemba Bungalows in Kioen. Jenet and I are very proud of her as her latest degree on top of her catering and hotel management degrees makes way over qualified for Rote. She has achived this all on her own merit.
